A web proxy acts as a middle man between you and the website you are trying to reach. Instead of your computer calling on the Myspace page, your couputer would call on the proxy page and then the proxy would call on Myspace page relaying the information back to your computer. Your computer only accesses the proxy site, and Myspace only sees the proxy site, not your computer.

People use proxies for different reasons. Some people wish to have increased security when browsing the web. By using a web proxy, the website users visit will not see the user, they will see the proxy's IP address and information. Many web proxies also block malicious scripts as well, thus preventing the spread of viruses.

Another reason, probably a more comon reason people use proxies is to circomvent blocked content on the web. China heavily filters most of its internet. Many inernet users in China will use proxies to access the rest of the web, the web that talks about freedom. It is also very common for users at a company to use proxies to surf blocked content Myspace, Facebook, and other sites that the company or corperation would normally block.
